Cagalli looked at the pile of papers on her desk and sighed. No matter how hard she worked, the pile never seemed to get smaller. And the worst wasn't the work in itself, but the fact that so little of it actually had any real meaning. Most of the paperwork was either redundant or pointless. Or downright moronic. As a side effect of the wartime, the cabinet offices were seriously understaffed and the non-essential staff was the first they had to cope without. That meant that she on top on everything else also had to deal personally with letters from assorted idiotic people.

She looked at the clock. It was well past midnight, and she had to get up early in the morning to get to another meeting. With another sigh she let the paper she was holding slide down onto the desk, turned off the light and left the room for the short walk to her bedroom.

It wasn't until she entered her room that she remembered that Athrun was there, already in bed, reading what looked like an electronics magazine.

He looked up when she entered, of course. He didn't say anything, but she could read his sympathy for her in his eyes. Seeing how she had been the last days, he must have noticed how overworked she was, but he was too polite to have said anything about it.

Without a word, she went over to the bed and let herself fall down on it, feeling the soft, cool sheets to her chin. She lay still for a short while, until she felt his hand softly starting to massage the back of her neck and her shoulders. It was a nice, relaxing feeling, and she let him continue for a few minutes before she decided to crawl closer into his embrace. Feeling his arms wrap tight around her. Feeling his warmth. Feeling that he cared.

That was all that she needed right now.
